Industrial Heritage
Based on examples from other countries (Kennecott Copper Mine, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA; Pemali Tin Mine, Indonesia; Honister Slate Mine, Great Britain; Martha Mine, Australia) the very development of such a large-scale mining project may itself warrant a tourism component related to the actual mining operation.
In addition, there are several elements of industrial heritage within the former state exploitation from Rosia Montana, including those kept within the current Mining Museum organized inside E.M. Roşia Montană. Over the last years, in Europe, there have been many cases when former mining areas have become tourist attractions after the closing of the mining operations in the respective areas. It should be pointed out within this context that many local communities from former mining areas have concentrated their efforts – often by founding and administering foundations – for the development of the tourist potential, this process being doubled by European initiatives at the highest level – such as the European Mining Heritage Initiative (MINTOUR), the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), the European Network of Mining Regions (ENRM).
Out of the most significant examples regarding the transformation of former mining areas into tourist attractions, we should mention the following:
- Mining park from Rio Tinto, Huelva, Spain (organized on the site of a former large copper operation);
- Mining park from Erzberg, Eisenerz, Austria (organized around the largest iron operation in Europe);
- Tourist park from Cap'Découverte, Midi-Pyrénées region, Frace (organized on the site of a former large coal operation);
- Big Pit – National Coal Museum, Blaenafon, Torfaen, Wales, Great Britain;
- Mining Museums from the Czech Republic in Příbram, Hradek - Kutna Hora, Okd Landez, Ostrava;
- The series of Mining Museums with underground circuits from Slovenia in Predil, Velenje, Idrija, Mežica etc;
- The series of Mining Museums with underground circuits from Germany, in Kupferberg, Goldkronach, Kali - Holungen/Schacht, Bad Ems, Frankenwald.
These are only some of the many thematic museums related to mining and mining history in Europe. Many similar examples are found in the United States, Canada and Australia.
