Our aim
The Protected Area – Historical Center of Roşia Montană is estimated to cover more than 135 ha. RMGC strategy regarding the future of the Protected Area includes actions/plans which would enable the rehabilitation and renovation of the protected area, so as to become a “living are” integrated into the existing community, providing that community with opportunities for sustainable development of economic activities other than mining, such as cultural tourism, agro-tourism, museum-related activities, etc. This is due to happen at the same time as the restoration and preservation of the historical and traditional elements of the area and its buildings that collectively preserve its cultural character, being important both for the protection of the community’s heritage, and the assurance of the area’s prosperity during and after the mining project, in the spirit of sustainability.
The Protected Area will include the architectural assets of the locality, which are to be restored and valorized. Part of them will be organized as a mining museum with geology, archaeology, ethnography exhibitions (with an outdoor section), industrial heritage and a major underground component situated around Cătălina Monuleşti gallery.
In this part of the locality, the company will aim to promote the development of traditional tourism (boarding houses, small restaurants). In the Eastern and South-Eastern areas of the old centre there are the historical pools: Tăul Mare, Tăul Brazi and Tăul Anghel. Modern recreational tourism may be developed here. All of these or similar initiatives must be undertakien in collaboration and consultation with the local community, as well as local authorities. A major component of this Protected Area is represented by the several hundreds of houses existing within this perimeter, which – while not formally “historic”, nevertheless contribute to the character of the village -- are to be rehabilitated and renovated.
At present, the area lacks the infrastructure necessary to achieve this prosperity. Many structures in the village are in very poor structural condition, while the environment has been seriously polluted due to faulty mining practices in the past and limited resources for maintenance work on the now-closes state-run mining operations. Through the proposed modern mining works and landscape rehabilitation plans, RMGC proposes measures to enable the rehabilitation of the environment and development of modern infrastructure in the Protected Area.
